Cayo Costa State Park

Cayo Costa State Park is located just north of Captiva Island.

The facilities and docks were destroyed in 2004 by Hurricane Charley and rebuilt.

The park service operates a tram which takes visitors across the island to the beach.

Don't you just hate beaches when they're crowded!

Great shelling here...

A very happy camper!

Morning at Cayo Costa...

Cabbage Key.

Left Estero Bay and entered San Carlos Bay. We passed beneath the Captiva bridge and entered Pine Island Sound. Below is a photo of the small town of St. James City located at the southern end of Pine Is.

Traveling approximately 20 miles, Cabbage Key came into view.

The restaurant and bar.

Built atop an ancient Calusa Indian shell mound, the cozy inn was constructed in 1938 by the son of playwright and novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart. Today, the old house contains six rental rooms, a lounge and a picturesque dining room wallpapered with thousands of autographed $1 bills including one of ours.

It is said that Cabbage Key was the inspiration for the Jimmy Buffet song "Cheese Burger in Paridise. That's a photo of Buffet in the center of the image. They say he visits often.

Dollar bills line the walls and ceiling.

.
About ten years ago, Vinny and Patty, Peg and I chartered a boat and visited Cabbage Key where we encountered "Terry the dockmaster", who passed 3 years ago. Terry had a reputation for berating boaters who would not follow his docking instructions. I remember quite vividly the colorful commentary Terry had when Vinny was docking the boat that day. I was soooo happy I wasn't docking the boat that day!

Only 2 ways to get to Cabbage Key and this is one.

First Light.

Tour boats bring lots of folks for lunch every day.

Goodland and Everglades City Florida

We left Marco and made a short stop at Goodland so we
could visit "Stans Idle Hour" and tied up at the Calusa Island Marina

Stan is quite famous in these parts. He is the owner of Stans Idle Hour, a waterfront restaurant (and I use that term lightly). At 85, he entertains every Sunday drawing as much as 2000 folks who come to hear him sing and tell jokes and listen to music and dance. We were told he gives most of the money to
charitable causes.

Leaving Goodland we entered Gullivan Bay and then the Gulf of Mexico headed South about 30 miles to Indian Key and the Ten Thousand Islands area. As you can see from the photo (not mine) without a GPS one could get lost forever. It is a very beautiful place.

Entering Everglades City on the Barron River.

The "Rod and Gun Club" at Everglades City, a charming Inn built in 1864.

We visited the "Museum of the Evergaldes" and learned a bit about the area.

Airboats are very common in the area....noisy buggers.

Typical bungalow along the river. Everyone has a boat in these parts.

A mega-yacht in Russell Pass.
His dink was bigger than First Light!

Upon returning to Snook Bight Marina, we discovered a boat a little to large for the slip.

Until next time....if there is a next time...

Marco Island, Florida

Left Ft. Myers Beach through Big Carlos Pass out into
the Gulf and encountered fog all the way to Capri Pass
where it finally lifted. This is a photo of the fishing pier
at Naples.

We entered Collier Bay and then into Smokehouse Bay to
The Esplanade Marina Complex at Marco Island.

Big money homes.

First Light at the Esplanade Marina Complex...this is quite a
place!

Outdoor bars...

restaurants....

shops....

art galleries.....

did I mention the bars...

More to come...
